On June 25th in Central London, Rhodes ambassadors Ezra Collective joined Fred again.., CA7RIEL and Paco Amoroso for a live session version of Beto’s Horns. Filmed live with no retakes, the performance is a testament to the talents of each musician – each so different in style, approach, and spirit – yet coming together seamlessly, feeding off one another in a spontaneous, electrifying exchange of creativity.
As Rhodes ambassadors, Ezra Collective brought their custom Rhodes MK8, which was one of the focal points of the stage setup.
For the most part, the MK8 sits inside the fabric of the mix, warm and understated, providing a subtle foundation. As the track progresses into its final third, the arrangement transforms, becoming heavier and more spacious, drawing the listener into an intensifying sonic landscape. This build and breakdown section represents the climax of the performance, where Joe’s tasteful lines with the MK8 cut through in a raw, direct way that aligns perfectly with the surging energy of the drums and horn stabs without overstating themselves.
Throughout the session, Joe Armon-Jones works the Rhodes MK8 with the touch and instinct that have made him one of the most recognisable keys players in UK jazz.
Fred again.. recalls the profound impression Joe made on him during their college days:
“Femi, Joe and I were actually all at the same music college. I do remember very clearly watching Joe playing keys at a lunchtime recital… it was totally unholy what he did to the keys for 1pm on a Tuesday afternoon.”
The remix came together in a single, unbroken take – a testament to the chemistry between Fred again.., Ezra Collective, and their collaborators. The result is a track that sits somewhere between jazz spontaneity, afrobeat, and contemporary production, where every horn hit, drum accent, and keyboard flourish is organic, alive, and in the moment.
The session shows how comfortably the MK8 integrates into modern ensemble performance – supportive, characterful, and ready to respond when the music opens up.
