From Harold Rhodes to a Sound That Shaped Generations

The Rhodes story began in 1946 with Harold Rhodes, whose earliest instruments grew from a belief in the power of music to teach, rehabilitate and inspire.

Working with limited materials in the aftermath of the Second World War, Harold Rhodes developed compact pianos using parts including aluminium tubing salvaged from military aircraft. Those early experiments laid the foundations for an instrument that would ultimately find its way onto stages, into studios and across some of the most important recordings of the twentieth century.

But what began as an educational idea became a new musical voice.Through the decades that followed, the Rhodes piano became inseparable from the evolution of jazz, soul, funk, rock, pop and beyond. Its unmistakable character passed through the hands of legendary artists, from Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Stevie Wonder to Patrice Rushen and Joe Zawinul, becoming part of the musical vocabulary of generations.

Roger Garvin, former Rhodes General Foreman and later Marketing Director during the Fullerton era, witnessed much of that story first-hand. Reflecting on the modern Rhodes and the legacy it carries, his assessment of the MK8/80AE was simple:

“You folks have honoured what Harold Rhodes and Leo Fender created in the best possible way.”

Created to mark Rhodes’ 80th anniversary, the MK8/80AE was conceived as more than a commemorative edition.

Built in the UK by the Rhodes Custom Shop and limited to just 80 instruments worldwide, it represents eight decades of Rhodes design, engineering and craftsmanship, viewed through the possibilities of the modern MK8.

Its gloss-varnished black oak case is paired with matching faceted legs, a transparent hood and an all-black custom keyboard. Black nickel polished chrome, silver chrome tone bars and bespoke chrome detailing run throughout the instrument, while a unique MK8/80AE serial plate and signed certificate of authenticity mark each piano’s place within the anniversary edition.

Beneath those details is the electromechanical heart of a Rhodes.

The MK8/80AE carries the sound, touch and dynamic response of the modern MK8 alongside its analogue preamp and onboard effects, bringing the character of the Rhodes piano into an instrument built for contemporary stages and studios.

For Roger Garvin, who spent a decade inside the original Fullerton operation, the progression was clear:

“What the 80AE pictures show is the attention to detail, quality components and innovation, superior to what we were capable of in Fullerton.”

The MK8/80AE is an instrument shaped by its past, but never confined by it.

Before the first MK8/80AE became available to order, the first unit was offered as the prize in a worldwide giveaway celebrating Rhodes’ 80th anniversary.

Over two months, the competition attracted just under 13,000 entries from across the globe, culminating in Donovan Allen being selected as the winner of MK8/80AE serial number 00.

The response offered an early indication of what this anniversary still means to musicians around the world. Eight decades after Harold began exploring a new approach to the piano, thousands of entries arrived for the opportunity to own the latest expression of that same idea.

Now, the opportunity to order one has drawn to a close.

From its black oak case and bespoke anniversary detailing to the electromechanical instrument at its centre, the MK8/80AE was designed to capture something unique: where Rhodes has been, what the piano has become and where it can go next.

And as orders draw to a close, the MK8/80AE has received another fitting recognition.

In 1946, Harold Rhodes introduced his early Pre-Piano at NAMM.

Eighty years later, the Rhodes MK8/80AE has been named a finalist in the Musical Instrument Hardware category at the 42nd Annual NAMM Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, with the winners set to be announced at The NAMM Show in Anaheim on January 28, 2027.

It is a fitting recognition for an instrument created to celebrate eight decades of invention, and a remarkable connection between the earliest days of Rhodes and the instrument being built today.

From Harold Rhodes’ first ideas to Fullerton, from the musicians who transformed the Rhodes sound into a musical language to the craftspeople building Rhodes pianos in Leeds today, the story has always been one of evolution.

The MK8/80AE celebrates 80 years of that story, while pointing firmly towards what comes next.
